Setting Up an eLearning Course

The following instructions are provided to create a basic eLearning course.  You'll see several additional fields that are optional to use based on your needs.  For more comprehensive information on each field, see the getting started section of the online help.  To create an eLearning course, navigate to the administrators console.  Expand the navigation bar on the left of the screen, click Wizards.  Quick load a new course or courses.  Click the radio button beside the type of course upload you wish to do.  For this example, we'll select import a single SCORM compliant course. Click next.  Click the upload button.  Locate the ZIP formatted file on your computer. Select the file, then click open to upload it to the system.  It may take several seconds to upload the course depending upon the file size.  The upload box will display the progress of the course upload.  Please note that an error message may appear when uploading a course.  Click OK to continue.  The courses title will display in the course import wizard.  Click next to continue.  Ensure that the import new courses only radio button has been selected.  Use the descriptions drop down menu to select whether the courses description will be uploaded to its short or long description fields, or both.  Note that the short description field can contain up to 400 characters.  Select the course provider from the provider drop-down menu.  Select the media type from the media drop down menu.  Select the category of the course from the category drop-down menu.  Select an audience template from the drop-down menu, if applicable, see the using audiences section of the online help For more information on creating and utilizing audience templates, click next.  Review the information provided by the course import wizard.  Once you have confirmed that it will import the course, click next to continue.  When the import is complete, click the edit course details button to automatically open the maintain learning resources screen.  The Overview tab of the new learning resource will appear.  The title, Short description, media and provider field should already be populated from your upload using the course import wizard.  Populate the time requirement field with the duration of time required to complete the course.  Use the resource status drop-down to indicate the status of the resource.  This could be active and active or retired.  Users will only be able to access the course if the resource status is set to active.  Optionally, you can check the allow multiple enrollment box to allow users to enroll in the course more than once.  For best practice, it's only recommended to check this box if users will be required to retake the course on a regular basis.  Next is the description tab.  Enter the long description of the course.  If you did not opt to populate it through the course import wizard.  You may copy the text from the short description field on the Overview tab if necessary. There are no required fields on the objectives tab.  However, you may want to enter any learning objectives here if you have them.  Click the details tab, the primary category or categories should have already been applied with the course import wizard.  You can also use this tab to designate achievements upon completion.  Ratings, evaluations and CEU credits if desired.  Use the owner's sub tab to populate the course owner field under the person column. The content owner should already be populated with your name.  Since you uploaded the course through the course import wizard.  Optionally enter any prerequisites for the course under the prerequisite sub-tab.  Navigate to the audience tab.  If you did not opt to use an audience template through the course import wizard, you can assign an audience here. There's a large amount of information pertaining to audience mapping for information on setting up the courses audience, see the using audiences section of the online help.  Please note that best practice is to leave the selections under the primary tab unmodified.  Next, navigate to the notifications tab.  Check the enable box to enable notifications, then enter the course title in the subject field.  If the course is going to be required, open the required course notification tab.  Check the enable notification box.  Enter the subject in the notification field.  Enter the message that will be sent to the audience in the notification text field.  We have desired quit the past due sub tab and check the Enable notification box to send a notification to the audience when the course is passed due.  Use the day's drop down menu to select the number of days after the due date when a user will receive a past due notification.  Use the subsequent reminders drop down menu to select the number of days that must pass before a user will receive an additional past due notification.  Check the carbon copy manager box if you wish for the users manager to receive these notifications as well.  Lastly, populate the notification subject and text fields.  If the metadata tab is available to you, click the time description sub-tab.  In the field provided, enter approximately how long it will take a user to complete the course in quarter hour increments.  For example, 15 minutes equals 0.25 hours.  When you're satisfied with all of your selections, click the save button in the top toolbar.  Return to the Overview tab and confirm that the course is set to active.  Then add the course to the course catalog.  See adding a course to the course catalog and the online help for instructions.
